- Welcome: Guest
At the south-western extremity of Europe, Portugals history and culture are inseparable from the sea. Once a great imperial power, it is now better known for sunshine, golf and fortified wine. The Costa de Prata, the Estoril coast and Costa Azul all compete for the attention of tourists, but best known are the beaches and year-round sunshine of the Algarve in the far south.
Situated in the extreme south of Portugal, the Algarve is a delight to visit all year round. The golden sandy beaches on the coast offer a haven for sun seekers whilst the sleepy hillside villages further inland offer peace and tranquillity for those looking to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
The 200 kilometres of coastline on Portugal’s south coast, with beautiful
sandy coves and sheltered bays or long golden beaches, make the Algarve the perfect spot for visitors who are looking to soak up the sun. The clear blue waters are ideal for water sports, while thrill seekers can find windsurfing, diving and jet skiing readily available. The Algarve is also well known for the region’s 31 world class golf courses, which make it one of the most popular golfing destinations in Europe. The Algarve’s wonderful climate makes the area a golfer’s paradise, with international, amateur and professional competitions taking place throughout the year.
The resorts of Albufeira, Vilamoura, Praia da Rocha and Armação de Pêra are the Algarve's principal holiday destinations. Once small villages, these towns have expanded since the 1960s into major holiday resorts. Offering an excellent selection of accommodation, beaches, entertainment and a variety of nightlife, ranging from cabaret shows at casinos to lively discos and quiet welcoming bars, it is no surprise that the Algarve has visitors coming back year after year.
The coastal city of Faro is the region’s capital city. Faro stands out as an important commercial, artistic and cultural centre. Often simply passed through by visitors as a gateway, the city in fact offers fascinating architecture inspired by the region’s rich history.
The Algarve coast also provides a haven for wildlife with the Ria Formosa Nature Park, situated between the beach of Ancão and the beach of Manta Rota, being home to a variety of different species. This area of outstanding natural beauty is ideal for hiking and boating. Tavira, situated on the edge of the Ria Formosa Nature Park, is a must-see for visitors to this part of the Algarve. This pretty town is abundant with historic churches and fine mansions and a plethora of excellent restaurants where you can sample some of the delicious local seafood.
Sagres, on the western coast was the place where Infante D. Henrique
(Henry the Navigator) founded a school of navigation during the 15th Century, thus launching the ages of exploration. Sagres was in fact the centre of maritime science for many of the great Portuguese Explorations and the remains of Henry’s fortress can still be seen today. Moving east, Henry the Navigator also had a great influence in Lagos. Set in one of the largest bays in the Algarve, Lagos was once an important naval centre and is now an attractive bustling town. Evidence of its important naval history is still visible today with a large statue of Henry the Navigator gazing out to sea situated in one of the town’s main squares.
Despite being most famous for its sandy beaches, the Inland villages of
the Algarve offer visitors peace and tranquillity in the lush green hills. The cork-oak forests are a haven for nature lovers, in fact they provide the natural habitat for the Iberian Lynx, now an endangered species. Just as interesting are the Algarve Mountains of the Serra de Monchique, Espinhaço de Cão and Serra do Caldeirão, that shelter the coast from the strong winds. These are the most fertile and greenest areas in the region, brightly coloured by fig trees, orange groves and almond trees. The mountains are also ideal places for bicycle and horseback rides, walking and hiking.
Whether you are looking to soak up the sun and enjoy the crystal clear waters and golden sands of the coast, delve into the history and culture of the region’s beautiful towns and or just relax in the lush green countryside, the Algarve has plenty to offer.
A wide range of accommodation is available, from world-class luxury hotels and resorts to private villas with pools, apartments or rooms to rent. There certainly is something to satisfy every taste and every budget in the Algarve, from the active to the relaxation seekers.
